Creating coders for tomorrow

Coding is catching the attention of a large number of people especially among the young generation. Everyone wants to stay ahead of the time and this is possible only if s/he acquires the required skills. In the present context, coding is of great importance as it is skill set which will be required for the students to succeed in the 21st century not only in schools or career but also beyond as it will provide a lot of opportunities.

Experts say coding is the language of tomorrow and that most of the skill sets that are required for the current jobs would become outdated in the coming few years. They say that coding is still a growing skill set which emerging opportunities. Therefore, it is imperative that the students learn coding at this early stage that will allow students to prepare for jobs that do not even exist in the current market scenario.

Importance of coding has rightly been highlighted by Mitchel Resnick, Professor of Learning Research, MIT Media Lab. He said: “Coding is the new literacy. To thrive in tomorrow’s society, young people must learn to design, create and express themselves with digital technologies.” Sheryl Sandberg (Chief Operating Officer, Facebook), said: “An understanding of computer science is becoming increasingly essential in today’s world. Our national competitiveness depends upon our ability to educate our children- and that includes our girls- in this critical field”.

Now this is very important to know how these skills can be imparted to the young generation in orders to create coders for tomorrow. Keeping this in mind, HT is launching India’s first-of-its-kind initiative “HT Codeathon” for the school students so that they acquire the required skills to become coders for tomorrow.

“HT Codeathon” has been planned with the view to provide a platform for the students to learn coding and also showcase the talent for young budding coders thereby putting them on an accelerated path to success. There are several benefits for being part of such an initiative. First, learning how to code at a very young age helps the students to be a more logical thinker and and also helps develop problem-solving opportunities.

Second, it helps to improve the critical thinking and analytical skills of the students which will make the students ready for future jobs. Moreover, coding also provides an opportunity for students to be more creative and also enhances their design skill, besides improving their computational thinking and making them ready for the competitive era. It also helps the students think out of the box.

Thus by imparting these skills to the young generation, we can create the future coders who will stay ahead of the time and get success in whatever career field they opt for in future. Equipping them with coding skills will enhance the overall academic performance of the students and will also help in enhancing their overall growth and make them ready for a competitive era.
